In the absence of professional testing equipment, the quality of feed grade beer yeast can be quickly determined through sensory analysis, simple physical and chemical testing, and biological validation. The following methods are combined with industry standards and practical experience, as well as enterprise technical documents, to ensure operability and accuracy.
1、 Sensory identification: intuitive judgment of basic qualities
Color and texture
High quality beer yeast should be a uniform light yellow to light brown powder with no obvious color difference or clumping. If the color is too dark (dark brown) or mixed with black particles, it may be due to mixing of raw materials or excessive drying leading to protein denaturation; If it appears grayish white or has a metallic luster, be alert to the adulteration of inorganic nitrogen (such as ammonium sulfate).
Odor characteristics
Normal yeast has a strong yeast fermentation aroma with a slight malt sweetness. If there is a sour, moldy, or pungent ammonia smell, it may be due to the deterioration of raw materials or the mixing of inferior ingredients such as leather powder. The sample can be placed in boiling water and kept warm for 5 minutes. The aroma of high-quality yeast will be significantly enhanced, while the odor of inferior products will remain unchanged or have an unpleasant odor.
Solubility test
Dissolve 5g of the sample in 50ml of warm water (30-40 ℃), stir and observe:
High quality yeast: quickly disperses, the solution is semi transparent, and there is no obvious precipitation at the bottom.
Poor yeast: it is slowly dissolved, the solution is turbid and the precipitation amount exceeds 5% (volume ratio), and may contain plant impurities such as corn meal and soybean meal.
2、 Simplified Physical and Chemical Testing: Quantitative Evaluation of Key Indicators
PH value determination
Use pH test strips to detect 5% yeast solution (5g sample+95ml water), and the pH should be between 4.5-6.0. If the pH significantly deviates from this range, it may affect the balance of animal gut microbiota. For example, a pH that is too high (>6.5) may result in incomplete fermentation and residual alkaline substances, while a pH that is too low (<4.0) may cause nutritional damage due to excessive acidification.
Impurity screening
Starch detection: Take a small amount of sample iodized solution (0.1mol/L). If the solution turns blue, it contains starch, which may be mixed with cheap fillers such as corn flour.
Inorganic nitrogen detection: Dissolve the sample in water and add silver nitrate solution dropwise. If a white precipitate appears, it may contain ammonium chloride; If precipitation occurs when adding barium chloride solution dropwise, it may contain ammonium sulfate.
3、 Biological validation: evaluation of actual feeding effectiveness
Small scale feeding experiment
Add 3-5% yeast to animal feed and feed continuously for 7 days. Observe:
Feed intake: High quality yeast containing vitamin B and small peptides can increase feed intake by 5-10%.
Fecal state: If the stool is formed and the odor is reduced, it indicates that yeast promotes intestinal digestion; If diarrhea or undigested particles occur, yeast may contain anti nutritional factors or impurities.
Microscopic observation (simple alternative)
Observe the suspension with a mobile microscope attachment (magnified 50-100 times):
High quality yeast: The cell morphology is uniform, oval or spherical, and there are no foreign objects.
Poor quality yeast: visible impurities such as feather powder (translucent tube like substance), blood powder (purple black particles), or leather powder (green block like substance).
4、 Key investigation of adulteration risk
index | Superior product standard | Characteristics of inferior products |
colour and lustre | Uniform pale yellow color | Dark brown, gray white or mixed color |
odor | Yeast special fragrance | Sour rot, ammonia odor or tasteless |
moisture content | ≤8% | Agglomeration and damp texture |
crude protein | ≥45% | Less than 40% and ash content>10% |
Procurement Tip: By using the above methods, reliable feed grade beer yeast can be quickly screened without professional equipment, providing guarantees for animal health and breeding benefits. In practical applications, it is recommended to combine multidimensional testing and compare it with samples from legitimate manufacturers for verification.
